Preparing Children Not Just for School, But for Life
For many years, success was often measured by academic achievement. Could a child read, write, count and perform well in exams?
Whilst these skills remain important, the world our children are growing up in is changing rapidly.
Many of the jobs our children will do have not yet been invented. Technology is transforming how we live and work. Information is available at the touch of a button.
In a world where knowledge is increasingly accessible, the qualities that will help children thrive are changing.
At Saffrons Park Nursery, we believe there are eight key skills and dispositions that every child needs for the future.
These are the foundations of our Future Ready Programme.
1. Curiosity
The ability to ask questions and seek understanding
Future-ready children are curious.
They wonder.
They investigate.
They explore.
Rather than simply accepting information, they ask:
Why?
How?
What if?
I wonder...
Curiosity is the engine that drives learning.
Children who remain curious are more likely to become lifelong learners, innovators and problem solvers.
How parents can support curiosity:
✔ Encourage questions
✔ Explore together
✔ Allow children time to investigate
✔ Say "Let's find out" instead of immediately giving the answer
2. Confidence
The belief that "I can do this"
Confidence is not about being the loudest person in the room.
It is about believing in yourself.
Confident children are more willing to:
Try new things
Share ideas
Take risks
Learn from mistakes
Confidence develops when children are trusted, encouraged and given opportunities to succeed for themselves.
How parents can support confidence:
✔ Celebrate effort
✔ Encourage independence
✔ Allow children to solve problems
✔ Focus on progress rather than perfection
3. Communication
The ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas
Communication is one of the most important skills children will ever develop.
It helps children:
Build relationships
Share ideas
Resolve conflicts
Express emotions
Communication is about much more than talking.
It includes listening, understanding others and making meaningful connections.
How parents can support communication:
✔ Have conversations together
✔ Read stories every day
✔ Listen carefully to children's ideas
✔ Encourage storytelling
4. Creativity
The ability to imagine possibilities
Creativity is often misunderstood.
It is not simply painting pictures or making crafts.
Creativity is the ability to:
Generate ideas
Think differently
Imagine possibilities
Create solutions
In the future, creativity will be one of the most valuable human skills.
How parents can support creativity:
✔ Provide open-ended resources
✔ Encourage imaginative play
✔ Value original ideas
✔ Allow children to experiment
5. Collaboration
The ability to work with others
The future will require people who can work effectively with others.
Children need opportunities to learn how to:
Listen
Share ideas
Negotiate
Cooperate
Respect different viewpoints
These skills begin developing in early childhood.
How parents can support collaboration:
✔ Encourage teamwork
✔ Model respectful communication
✔ Involve children in family decisions
✔ Create opportunities for group activities
6. Problem Solving
The ability to think through challenges
Life is full of problems.
Future-ready children learn that challenges are opportunities to think, adapt and grow.
Rather than waiting for adults to provide answers, they learn to:
Test ideas
Evaluate options
Adapt their thinking
Find solutions
How parents can support problem-solving:
✔ Ask "What do you think?"
✔ Encourage children to try different approaches
✔ Avoid solving every problem for them
✔ Celebrate perseverance
7. Resilience
The ability to keep going when things are difficult
Resilience helps children navigate challenges, setbacks and disappointment.
Resilient children understand that mistakes are part of learning.
They learn to:
Try again
Adapt
Persevere
Recover from setbacks
These skills support wellbeing throughout life.
How parents can support resilience:
✔ Allow children to experience manageable challenges
✔ Talk positively about mistakes
✔ Praise perseverance
✔ Model resilience yourself
8. Independence
The ability to take responsibility and make decisions
Independent children become capable learners.
When children are given opportunities to do things for themselves, they develop:
Responsibility
Confidence
Initiative
Self-belief
Independence begins with small everyday experiences.
How parents can support independence:
✔ Encourage self-help skills
✔ Give children responsibilities
✔ Allow them to make choices
✔ Trust them to have a go
Looking Beyond School Readiness
Traditionally, many conversations about early childhood have focused on school readiness.
Can children recognise letters?
Can they count?
Can they hold a pencil?
These skills are important, but they are only part of the picture.
At Saffrons Park Nursery, we believe children need more than school readiness.
They need to be:
🌱 Curious
⭐ Confident
💬 Communicators
🎨 Creative
🤝 Collaborators
🧩 Problem Solvers
🌈 Resilient
🏆 Independent
These are the qualities that will help children thrive not only in school, but throughout their lives.
Our Promise
Through our Future Ready Programme, we are committed to nurturing these skills every day through play, enquiry, exploration, creativity, nature and meaningful relationships.
Because the future does not belong to those who simply know the answers.
It belongs to those who know how to think.
